ever increasing costs of maintenance, labor and overhead cannot be
avoided and are among several of the reasons for the increase. If

Pacific Alaska
Freightways Celebrates 50 Years of Service
2/15/11
Pacific Alaska Freightways - Delivering
Customized Solutions for Over 50 Years
Finding a family business surviving from one generation to the
other is a rarity, but Pacific Alaska Freightways, formerly Pacific
Alaska Forwarders, continues to thrive after 50 years. Rex and
Dorothy Sears began PAF at a small office in the Coleman Building
Seattle - until 1966 when they obtained a warehouse in the Sodo
district of Seattle. Five years later, Joe Smith joined the team to
run the company while spearheading new business, resulting in
expanding the company to a full-service trucking/consolidating
operation. Eventually Smith took over and consolidated business from
the Lower 48 to Alaska making PAF one of Alaska's premier freight
haulers and logistics providers.
PAF began to focus on the Last Frontier and go after the
plumbing, construction and electrical distributors. The success
resulted in opening its first freight terminal on South Holgate
Street in Seattle. Smith expanded his team and provided freight
services via the Alaska HydroTrain, Alaska Trainship and SeaLand
(now Horizon Lines) to Central, Southeast and Kodiak, Alaska.
With Smith taking on more work he began incorporating his sons
into the business by having them clean the warehouse and drive the
forklift on weekends. As they grew, the boys started to take
interest in the business and became part of the PAF team and
modernizing the way the company did business.
As the business began to grow and freight volume increased, PAF
collaborated with Sealand and Tote to move cargo directly into the
Port of Anchorage from Tacoma, Washington. By the late 1990s, PAF
built a larger Washington facility, which now houses its corporate
offices in addition to acting as the hub for Northwest distribution.
They also built new terminals in Anchorage and Fairbanks, while
upgrading other terminals and computer systems throughout the state.
In early 2000, PAF provided a "Midwest Gateway" when they
opened a consolidation center in Chicago, to more efficiently move
freight and reduce handling to Alaska and the Pacific Northwest.
Today PAF maintains a network of terminals, hundreds of trucks
and containers, an in-house freight management system and full
service truckload brokerage with the finest work force in the
industry.
"The bottom line is that everyone needs to move their
freight safe and secure without incident, we have the experience and
know-how at PAF. Several of our team members have over 35 years of
dedicated service providing our clients with choices to organize and
move their products efficiently and cost-effectively" says
PAF CEO Ed Fitzgerald.

New Name & Logo!
UPDATE 11/12/07
Pacific Alaska Forwarders has a new name and Logo! Pacific
Alaska Freightways, Inc.
When the company was first founded in 1961, Pacific Alaska
Forwarders had few assets and conducted business as a freight
forwarder. By providing effective transportation solutions into and
out of the state of Alaska the company grew a committed customer
base and over time evolved into much more then just freight
forwarder.
Over the years PAF has maintained a network of terminals -
located in Fife, WA, Alaska terminals in Anchorage, Fairbanks and
Kenai - as well as hundreds of trucks and containers, a freight
management system, and the finest work force in our industry. We are
much more then a forwarder; rather, we are an asset based
transportation provider serving the lower 48 and the great state of
Alaska -- we are Pacific Alaska Freightways!
Our name change is to better reflect what we have been doing for
many years. PAF will continue to grow and develop to meet our
customer's ever changing requirements by investing wisely in our
People, technology, terminals and equipment.
Thank you for your continued support!

Rail
Service Issues
Please be aware that as we move into the spring and summer
seasons, rail volumes are increasing, causing congestion at rail
ramps. In a recent conversation with the Burlington Northern, they
advised that they are experiencing record volumes, and they haven't
reached peak yet. All major railroads are short on power (engines),
and on time performance is suffering. Sitting trains are
occasionally blocking intersections in some locations.
As a reminder, once a container begins moving on the rail, the
railroad has complete control of the move. Generally even if there
is a problem, a container or containers often cannot be taken off
the train because the railcar may not be accessible, there may be no
top pick service available, or the railroad doesn't want to delay
the train for the removal of one or a few containers.
Therefore, since we cannot guarantee transit time, please
allow an additional week (or two) for your cargo moving by rail.
You may want to consider moving any time sensitive freight (where a
required delivery date is critical) by truck.
24 Hour Delivery Notice
for Inbound Freight
With
the stringent rules the ports must maintain to keep Port Security,
we are being told that all
inbound freight delivered direct to the piers must have a 24
Hour Appointment Notice.
(The 24 hour notice also gives PAF the opportunity to contact
the customers to find out their shipping requirements before the
freight arrives in town and direct it to the right location.)
The information required is the name of the inbound truck
line along with the appropriate booking number.
This is given to the Security Gates at the piers and if
they do not have the information 24 hours in advance your freight
will be turned away.
This
is why it is so important to request your shippers put the following
note on their shipping manifest so drivers/dispatchers are aware of
the necessity of making this appointment for delivery of all
freight.
Transportation Tip
Hazardous Materials handling requirements and documentation
regulations continue to increase and PAF suggest you notify your
suppliers that we need to have all haz mat freight at our
dock the day before the sailing. As an example, have
your freight at PAF on Tuesday for the Wednesday sailing and by
Thursday for the Friday sailing. This will insure that your freight
is not left off the ships.
Port
Security Charge Increase
7/26/04 - The Alaska vessel operators have increased their Port
Security Charge from $31 to $37. All rates via PAF include the
original Port Security Charge. Effective August 1st, 2004, there
will be a $6 flat charge on your invoice to cover the increase in
the fee. This will apply only on full load shipments that move via
steamship. Pacific Alaska Forwarders will absorb the increase on LTL
shipments.
Tip - Purchase Order on
Bill of Lading
03/29/04 Tip - Insist that your suppliers put your purchase order
number on the Bill Of Lading, so we can enter it in to our computer
system when we receive it. This will make for more accurate
information and guarantee top quality service from PAF. In addition,
you will be able to use your PO number as search criteria on PAF
website.
